More than 70% of information we receive is processed through our visual system - which is why your eye health and vision is so important to us.
The starting point is an eye examination - a thorough check of your eyesight and the health of your eyes. Detailed testing gives us an understanding of how you use your eyes.
Examinations, tailored to your individual concerns, include: • Vision assessment, including distance and near vision, binocular and colour vision • Eye health assessment screening for cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration • Children's vision assessment with age-appropriate techniques and equipment • Fitting prescription contact lenses compatible with healthy eyes
When we have your prescription, we use Dispensing expertise and current lens technology to achieve clear, comfortable vision.
Beyond the traditional eye examination we have other diagnostic tests and tools at McDonald Adams. Visual field testing, retinal photography and tomography (eye scans) help us conduct full glaucoma testing.
Our Optometrists Sally, Claire and Deanna are registered to use prescription medication to treat eye conditions such as uveitis and keratitis.
We understand your choice of frames is a very important part of eyewear; it can be a statement or a reflection of who you are.
We curate our range of frames carefully so you will find a perfect match. A frame which will enhance your prescription as well as look good and feel great.
Form, Function and Fit.
When we help you choose, you know your frames will be perfect for your specific lenses and reflect your personality and way of life.
Our goal is to have you looking better.

Giving you optimum vision requires the skills of both Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians.
Our starting point is an accurate prescription and a good understanding of your lifestyle requirements. We want to know you so that your lenses are the best possible fit for your lifestyle.
We combine that knowledge with careful dispensing, selecting lenses from a range of constantly evolving designs and materials. There is a very good reason that we don't give everyone the same lens for a package price - you're not the same as everyone else.
We rigorously assess lens performance so that we can select for you from the best available. This includes us, and our staff, wearing different lens designs ourselves to fully understand them from a wearer's point of view. So we are in the perfect position to help you make the best choice.
Contact Lenses & Ortho-Keratology
Modern contact lenses are easy to use, so more people can enjoy the freedom of contact lenses.
Many people now use Daily Disposable lenses. Daily disposable lenses allow you to use contacts without any solutions and cleaning - the ultimate in comfort and convenience. You can use contacts on a part time basis, or for a specific sport.
The other disposable contact lens option is monthly and fortnightly replacement lenses. These lenses are made from Silicone Hyrdogel, a very breathable material which is a healthy choice for your eyes.
Ask us today if you are suitable for contacts - we can arrange a contact lens trial.
We have a fantastic range of sunglasses, and we can fit your prescription lenses into nearly every pair in our range. Latest lens technology means you can combine stunning frames with comfortable through your prescription. And this is possible even with wrap styles.
We love graduated tints which are flattering and easy to wear. These are perfect for progressive lenses; you will have comfortable reading through the lighter tint at the bottom of the lens.
Driving is a complex and demanding task where we rely on our vision. Light reflected from smooth surfaces like the road and the car bonnet creates glare – a major source of fatigue. Photochromic (colour change) lenses and polarized lenses give high definition, contrast and colour enhancement. Your vision will be sharp with amazing clarity and blocking out most blue light at the same time. This means less fatigue. Ask us to recommend a lens for you.
We carry a wide range of brands, both mainstream and designer styles.
Children's Vision & Behavioural Optometry
Comfortable clear vision is vital for successful progress at school. Reading, writing, working from the board and with screens are more difficult if you have a vision problem.
We can help solve sight problems which hinder learning, and assess that vision is developing fully. Vision develops from birth through to age 7-8 years, including complex oculo-motor skills relating to eye-teaming and focusing. Poor vision in only one eye can be missed, which can result in amblyopia, commonly called lazy eye.
A full eye examination assesses:
Distance & near vision; Changing focus (accommodation); Aiming the eyes (fixation); Stereo vision, (3D vision); Colour vision; Eye health.
Optometrists Sally, Claire and Deanna use age appropriate, fun tests to encourage cooperation.
Vision is more than just eyesight - it how we interpret, understand and act on information coming in through our eyes. Children can have normal 20/20 eyesight yet still struggle in the classroom. This can be due to problems with:
Eye movements; Eye teaming; Eye-hand coordination; Visual form perception; Longsightedness.
Visual skill normally improve over time. If there are areas where your child is not progressing at school, a full Behavioural Optometry assessment with Sally Adams can help. This can uncover vision problems which can be improved with glasses and Vision Therapy.
Red Eye & Dry Eye
Many people come to us with red, sore eyes; and the list of probable causes is substantial. Red sore eyes can stem from conditions which are potentially sight threatening so it is important to have these symptoms checked.
We use specialized equipment including the bio-microscope to assess red eyes, and we are qualified to prescribe medicated eye-drops.
Dry Eye is a general classification given to a range of eye conditions. The source of dry eye can be inflammation of the eyelids, secondary to medications, autoimmune disease, and external environmental factors. With careful testing we can identify causes of dry eyes, and devise a management plan.
Glaucoma affects 2% of New Zealanders, and 10% of people over 70 years of age. It is described as the silent thief of sight because in most cases there are no symptoms in the early stages of the condition. However early detection and treatment can preserve vision for many people.
It is very important to know your family history and also have regular check with us after the age of 40. If we identity other risk factors during we will recommend further testing and monitor you closely.
Glaucoma testing is not simply 'having a pressure check'. We include visual field testing and scanning the nerve in the eye - all available at McDonald Adams Optometrists.
Safety glasses are not regular glasses and your everyday glasses should not be a replacement for safety glasses. Proper eye protection is important.
One major difference is the lens material. Safety glasses are made with high impact resistant material, the same material is also used for aircraft windshields. Your eyes are protected as the chances of the lenses shattering on impact is slim to none; these lenses are tested to withstand high impact projectiles that regular glass or plastic lenses would not.
Safety glasses are a complete unit, lenses fitted to frame which have passed rigorous testing. Safety frames give wraparound coverage. Modern safety glasses are also very comfortable, fine to be worn all day.
Wearing your regular prescription glasses under safety glasses do not allow safety glasses to sit where they are supposed to or, in some cases, to seal appropriately to your face.
If you need prescription lenses, and you wear safety glasses on a regular basis, the best option for you is prescription safety glasses, ask us about protecting your eyesight.
