We recommend students take a range of science subjects at Year 13 level including biology, chemistry, and physics. If students have to choose, or only wish to take two science subjects, we recommend biology and chemistry. At least one English-rich subject is also strongly recommended.

Students apply for the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science first. Entry to this degree requires a rank score of 280 at NCEA level 3. The first year of this programme includes all the courses which are required for entry to the Bachelor of Optometry.

Students who are interested in the Bachelor of Optometry apply by 1 October in their first year of Biomedical Science. Entry to Optometry is by a selection process; students whose indicative GPAs are suitable are considered for an interview. The interview results and actual GPAs are then considered and the top students offered a place in the Bachelor of Optometry. Only 60 students can be taken in any year. More details are available here.
